This book fits perfectly with the grade 6 unit on transportation. It gives a much bigger view of the different ways kids get to school.
The choice of this book was by absolute chance. There was a full set of 30 of these books, so I decided to give it my best shot and see how it went.
Notes
The vocabulary covered in this book is way beyond what is covered in the general curriculum. I don’t place a heavy influence on mastery of all the words in the story.
By the end of all the activities, most of the students will, at least, be able to identify the different means of transport.
Lesson plan 1
The first lesson is primarily devoted to introducing all the different types of transport and getting the students to practice them.
The primary methods for doing this are listening and matching.
Lesson plan 2
The second lesson is about listening and focusing on the book. The reason is that they now know most of the components that make up the story, so lets put them together in context for the students to see.
Information gap
This activity should only be attempted with grade sixes. The lower grades will have difficulty and the meaning of the practice will be lost.
There is not a lot of practice of the sentence patterns needed for this activity. I’ve assumed that most of the students will get the gist of what’s going on and be able to follow the patterns on the board.
For those that are weaker, just give them a helping hand. This is when creating a cooperative class environment comes in handy. Students should know how to help each other without judgement. For example, NOT, “Why don’t you know.” which is unhelpful, but rather just filling in the gaps and letting them repeat if necessary.
Final Notes
Let me reiterate that it’s not worth putting too much effort into getting students to memorize the words from the story.
The main transportation is useful, and the extras are simply for interest. Focus on developing and improving their listening skills.
